Because Archaeology employs a wide range of different procedures, it can be considered to be both a science and an art. It is a career for people who love reading, observing and exploring. The work involves carefully excavating the things, cleaning them, preserving them and studying them. Some of the exciting discoveries have been made by archaeologists. To do so they usually travel to sites and stay there for quite a long period of time.

Some different archaeological sciences are: Archaeometry, Dendrochronology, Isotope analysis, Palynology, Radiocarbon dating, Zooarchaeology, Geoarchaeology, Bioarchaeology, Archaeogenetics and Computational Archaeology. The nature of work thus is very scientific.

Career in Archaeology

Archaeology is the perfect career for people who derive self-satisfaction in discovering a part of history and culture long lost in the dust of time. It is a profile that is very demanding since Archaeologists have to spend umpteen hours and days camping and undertaking field work at excavation sites and in labs. An Archaeologist therefore must have the patience to work on a project that may take months and even years to compete. Abundant knowledge of history, having an avid reading habit, excellent penmanship, and an analytical and focused mind are some essential skills that make a good Archaeologist. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is the main recruiter of archaeologists in our country both at the centre and the state levels.

Students who have earned a Post Graduate degree in Archaeology can apply for lectureship in various Universities across the Country. There is also an option to pursue a Doctorate degree in the capacity of a paid Research Fellowship. Archaeologists also have the option to take up a job in Government or privately owned museums for the safe upkeep and management of museum artifacts.

ASTRONOMER AND SPACE RESEARCHER

Introduction

Astronomy is the science which deals with the study of heavenly bodies. Astronomy is necessarily an observational science rather than an experimental one. The discussions and interpretation of observations employs the use of mathematical analysis, often of the most advanced type. Celestial bodies and celestial environment provide natural laboratories for studying physical phenomena in extreme conditions which are seldom realized in our terrestrial environment. Physical and mathematical theories are thus stretched to the limit to provide explanations for the celestial phenomena that we observe.

Modern astronomy requires the use of most modern and advanced technologies, e.g. in fabrication of modern telescopes, in building imaging and spectroscopic equipment to observe and analyse radiation received from the celestial objects. It needs fast computers, state-of-the-art software to handle data and process images; it needs stable space platforms to observe radiation otherwise blocked by the Earth's atmosphere.

Career in Astronomy

Astronomy is a promising and amazing career for those who are interested in the mysteries of the universe and has a desire to unravel them. For entering into this field, one should be good at general Physics. Astronomy is a vast field which varies from the instrument building teams to the theoretical branches where mathematical ability and physical intuition is essential. Apart from good programming skills, curiosity and ability to search out answers are also essential in this field. One's career in this field depends on what aspect of astronomy they are interested to work in. In the professional level, astronomy is divided into observational astronomy and theoretical AstroPhysics. While the former deal with observing celestial bodies by using telescopes, binoculars, cameras, unaided eyes etc and collecting data for building and maintaining instruments; the latter is concerned with data analysis - finding out the conclusions of observations of computers and explaining the observational results. Theoretical AstroPhysics is more analytical and astrophysicists model data.

After completion of a course in Astronomy, one can find placement as a Research Scientist with several research institutes and big Government organizations like the Indian Space Research Organization (DRDO). Employment opportunities exist in organizations such as the TIFR (Government of India’s National Centre for Nuclear Science and Mathematics), the National Centre for Radio AstroPhysics, Pune and Ooty, the IIS, Bangalore, the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and AstroPhysics, Pune, Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad, UP State Observatory at Nainital, the Indian Institute of AstroPhysics and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Bangalore, Astronomical Society of India, Udaipur Solar Observatory, and the CSIR. Some researchers also go on to work at leading observatories and institutes in the USA.

Courses and Eligibility

There are many branches of Astronomy like Astrochemistry, Astrometry, Astrobiology, Astrometeorology, Astrogeology and accordingly the following are the courses in this field:

  • Theoretical Astronomy/observations - B.Sc. in Physics and /or Mathematics after 10 + 2. Master’s level course in Astronomy with specialization in Theoretical Astronomy is offered by various institutes and universities.
  • Instrumentation/Experimental Astronomy - Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Electrical / Electronics/Electrical Communications, after 10 + 2. Then one can appear for the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) examination, which makes one eligible to do specialization in astronomy leading to Ph.D. A professional astronomer also takes courses in microelectronics & instrumentation.

BIOCHEMISTRY RESEARCH SCIENTIST

Introduction

Biochemistry combines the fields of Microbiology, Cell biology, Genetics, Chemistry, and Physics in their day-to-day work or experiments to enhance understanding at the cell and molecular level. Many of the remarkable molecular tools that allow us to analyze genes and proteins were developed by Biochemists. Many scientists are also engage in cutting-edge research into disease therapies and prevention, and drug development. If cancer is to be cured, if the planet's pollution is to be cleaned up or if the aging process is ever slowed, it will probably be the Biochemists and Molecular Biologists who will provide the knowledge for these breakthroughs. At the molecular level, there's the quest to understand the information in the DNA, to discover how portions of the genetic material are turned 'on' and 'off', and to learn how the exact shape of a protein determines what is will do. On a larger scale, scientists are struggling to see how different chemicals fit together to form cells, how those cells interact to build large organisms, and how seemingly-subtle differences in the chemical instructions issued by the DNA are able to sculpt Earth's vast array of life forms.

Career in Biochemistry

The most exciting employment is in environmental and pollution control companies, and the Biotechnology industry. Biotech companies use the advances in Molecular Biology to improve agricultural crops, develop new kinds of drugs, or harness microbes to recycle wastes. Biochemists are also employed by Government or in the private sector, such as a vaccine company, a clinical reference laboratory doing tests for physicians and health departments, or a pharmaceutical corporation. Many industries require biochemists to ensure the safety of their products, such as food processing and the dairy industry.

There are good openings for molecular biologists in the biotech industry, and in research institutes. Teaching is also an option. Medical colleges sometimes hire PhDs in Biochemistry to teach medical students.

Courses and Eligibility

MICROBIOLOGISTS

Introduction

Microbiology is the study of microorganisms - little, really little, critters. To be specific, microorganisms are the organisms which can only be seen through a microscope - they form the foundation of the pyramid of life. Some microbes are hugely useful to mankind (the yeast microbe used in baking and brewing, other bacteria and fungi used in the dairy industry to make cheese and curd) and others (those that cause infections in humans, plants and animals) are plainly harmful. Microbiologists investigate the fascinating world of microorganisms. They are in involved both in discovering how to cultivate and use the good ones and how to isolate and then use the infectious ones in formulating vaccines and antibiotics to treat or protect against the very diseases they cause. Every day, microbiologists around the world explore, investigate and discover how microbes exist and affect our lives. Microbiology is an exciting and challenging field because it seeks to find drugs for life-threatening illnesses.
